Captain Kraig D. Smith


Captain Kraig D. Smith Enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in October 1993 after playing Men's Basketball at Texas Tech University and working in the civilian community for several years. Graduated from Echo Company, 2nd Battalion, Recruit training Regiment, MCRD San Diego as the Company Honorman and received a meritorious promotion to the rank of Lance Corporal. Upon Graduation, LCpl Smith went on to complete Marine Combat Training at Camp Pendleton, CA and Personnel Administrative School at Camp Johnson, NC. His first Fleet duty assignment was with 2d ANGLICO. While at 2d ANGLICO, LCpl Smith served as administrative clerk and Personnel Chief. He was meritoriously promoted to the rank of Corporal and also was awarded the Navy/Marine Corps Parachutist Insignia while at 2d ANGLICO. Prior to receiving orders to Okinawa, JA in June of 1996, Cpl Smith applied to Officer Candidates School through the Meritorious Commissioning Program (MCP). Upon arriving at Camp Courtney, Okinawa, JA, Cpl Smith joined the command element of III MarDiv and worked as the sponsorship NCO. After being on the "Rock" for less than two months, Cpl Smith was informed that he had been accepted to attend the 1996 winter OCC class in Quantico, VA.

Second Lieutenant Smith graduated 7th out of 215 Lieutenants from the 163rd Officer's Candidate Class in December of 1996 and then went on to graduate 10th out of 245 Lieutenants from The Basic School in June of 1997. After TBS, 2ndLt Smith attended the Field Artillery Officer's Basic Course in Ft. Sill, Ok and went on to join Sierra Battery, 5th Battalion, 11th Marines in February of 1998. During his 2 and a half years at S Battery, 5/11, Lieutenant Smith held the following billets: Forward Observer, Fire Direction Officer, Artillery Liaison Officer and Executive Officer, Weapons Company, Battalion Landing Team, 1/4. During his tenure at 5/11 and 1/4, Lieutenant Smith participated in 3 Combined Arms Exercises (CAX), 1 WTI, 3 11th Marines Desert Fire Exercises and over 50 live fire training exercises. His training as a Lieutenant culminated through his deployment as the Artillery Liaison Officer/Weapons Company XO on the 2000 15th MEU WESTPAC.

After returning to Camp Pendleton from deployment in July 2000 1stLt Smith transferred to the College Degree Program at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, TX to finish his bachelors degree in Marketing. Upon graduation from Texas Tech, Captain Smith took command of Detachment 5, Headquarters and Service Company, 6th Motor Transport Battalion, 4th Force Service Support Group in Lubbock, TX.

Captain Smith is married to the former Shellie Dawn Copeland of Lubbock, TX. They have two boys, Ashton who is six and Ayden who is 2. They currently reside in Lubbock.

Captain Smith has been awarded the Navy Commendation Medal, the Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal, the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Medal, the Humanitarian Service Medal, the Meritorious Unit Commendation Ribbon, the Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon, the Navy and Marine Corps Overseas Service Ribbon, and the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon.
